"I wish I could just talk about things, like I used to! But the things I want to talk about, I really can't, anymore. I wonder what Mama and Papa would think, about it...? About ... everything."

history ;;
Dairanne was born the younger of two daughters into a fairly well-to-do middle class family. The family functioned well enough; her mother brought home the bacon, of course, and her father did his share, as men were supposed to do in Atsiria. Of course, this meant that the parents themselves had little time to spend with their children, though Dairanne always appreciated the effort that her father put into spending time with them, reading them stories and tucking them in at night. Mother didn't have time for stories and games; she didn't seem to care too much for the pictures that Dairanne would draw either, though they would get put up on the wall all the same, so maybe she did like them, somehow.
At first she attempted to be like her mother and sister. After all, they were women, and women were supposed to be proud, and strong, able to command respect. Though she failed at this fairly early on; she simply did not like being mean, even if she had every right to. She did not understand why their mother was so mean to their father in public, and even at home; though she almost didn't seem to have a nice word for anyone, unless she herself admired and respected them. These were usually the friends that she would invite over, the friends that would watch both girls when the parents were at work.
Dairanne was always very friendly despite being shy; she enjoyed the company of boys and did not understand why it was a bad thing to talk and play with them. Of course, this sentiment earned her some ridicule among her babysitters and her sister's friends, though mother never said a word of it. That was most likely the influence of their father; which made her feel a little better. She knew that her mother disapproved, which made her feel somewhat guilty, especially when Karlesta would yell at her about it, though she became used to this in time. If father could forgive mother for being mean to him all the time and still love her, then she could forgive her sister for being her usual self. At least that was what she told herself every night when she would bury her face in her pillow after desparaging remarks, even after pretending that it all was okay so that her own friends wouldn't worry.
Having Daddy around always made everything better; he knew how to make her smile when she was upset, would encourage her to draw him pictures, and would continue to read to her even after her sister declined these treats. Having him there made everything better; she would run to the door and fling herself into his arms once he came home from work, and smile politely at her mother, who would sometimes give her smiles in return. She did not want her life to change, not after she had gotten so used to it in the first place.
So of course. Change. Dairanne wasn't quite sure when it happened, or why; it seemed that one day family life was normal, and the next few days after she noticed a change in her father; how he seemed weary and tired... and then everything changed. The world was a blur; first hearing that he was sick (oh but he would be okay again soon, wouldn't he?) She worried and fretted and reached out for her sister, but of course nothing came from that direction; but she knew that everything would be all right and she would not cry (Mama always thought she was weak for crying, mother never cried and Daddy would be okay except that now Mommy was sick too) right up until the day that they both were given the news and even then she tried to be strong (but Daddy always said it was okay to cry so perhaps she should ...)
It has been some time since she and Karlesta were sent to live in the orphanage, not having any other family member of their own to take them in. It took her some time to adjust, though not terribly long. The other orphans reached out to her and she accepted their friendship and support gratefully, and only wanted to return it, though they were far more adjusted to their situation than she was. Even though she has been there for nearly a year, the pain of the loss and the fragmenting of her family, not to mention being pushed away by her sister has not truly allowed her to heal as much as she might have even with the support.
After some time passed, Karlesta began to show an interest in the Goddesses, a new religion that had begun to surface in Atsiria. While the orphanage discouraged this, it only made her sister more determined to meet the prophet and learn more about the religion. Finally angered to a point to actually get up and do something about it, her sister set fire to their bedroom and fled the orphanage in the resulting panic. Devastated by her sister's disappearance (and apparent death), Dairanne became more detached from her peers, who couldn't understand her reaction. When she discovered that Karlesta was in fact, still alive, and now under the protection of the very Prophet she sought to meet, she was relieved, though she was forced to keep this fact secret from her peers, who gradually began to treat her differently as well, for reasons that she couldn't understand. Her two friends on the journals, Lysander and Colleen, had disappeared for a time as well, also adding to her worry, and making her feel very much alone.
After months of this had gone on, as her sister began to travel the desert with a rather curious company, yet another change surfaced in Dairainne's life; she was adopted by a woman named Lady Magatha. She has not yet found a way to tell her sister of this change, as she is still becoming used to it herself.

personality ;;
Dairanne is a quiet girl, and is fairly meek about her opinions, unless she feels strongly about something. While growing up she was rather intimidated by her mother and sister, and even now she still loves them, though she fears her sister's wrath; they were what she felt she could not become; she wanted to be strong, like them. While she worried over this, she later slowly became happy with who she was; she did not want to be mean, after all; she liked her friends. In new situations at first she can seem rather hesitant, though there are some things to which she can adapt.
It hurt her deeply when she was mocked for her choices and actions, however this did not make her want to change, either.
Dairanne tends to get caught up in her emotions, though she doesn't think that it's too much of a bad thing to cry sometimes. Her strained relationship with her sister also upsets her, nearly as much as the loss of her parents. She also feels sorry for her sister; while she can find her cruel she also loves her very much, and just wants her to make peace with being at the orphanage. While she was mocked as a child, she does not feel that it's right for her sister to be mocked as well, though all she can do is flail and apologize for the older girl's actions, hoping that some day she would understand.
She does not like to be alone. Granted she is shy, but it does not take too much prodding to bring her out of her shell if an offer of friendship is made. She usually has a warm smile ready for her friends, even if she does not talk too much in conversation.
There are many things that keep her awake at night. Fears, dreams, nightmares... thoughts of the past and things that may come in the future. She desperately misses her former home, even though the situation at the orphanage has been considerably better for her than for her sister. She misses her old friends, and worries constantly that one day she might have to choose between her new friends and her sister. She wishes that she could choose her sister, and feel comfortable with that choice... yet she hopes that she will not be put into that position.

appearance ;;
Dairanne has a petite and slender frame, and is very small, only about 4'9 (144 cm) in height. Her shoulder-length hair is a soft shade of red, and bangs fall to just above her eyes, which are blue. Her expressions are usually sad, though is capable of very pretty smiles. Her clothing is simple and plain, like those of the other orphans.
